Associate Structural Engineer

Overview

As an Associate Structural Engineer, you will lead the delivery of diverse structural projects from inception to completion, guiding technical decisions and coordinating multidisciplinary teams. You’ll mentor engineers, nurture client relationships, and support the Leeds office’s growth. You’ll work across sectors including commercial, residential, education and healthcare, delivering innovative, sustainable solutions. This role offers heightened leadership and a clear path to senior responsibilities within a collaborative, client-facing environment.

Responsibilities

• Lead the structural design and delivery of building projects
• Manage projects from concept through detailed design and construction
• Oversee programmes, resources and deliverables to meet quality and timescales
• Provide technical leadership and review calculations, drawings, specs and reports
• Collaborate with architects, clients, contractors and other consultants for coordinated solutions
• Attend and lead client and design team meetings, representing Waterman Group
• Develop and maintain relationships with clients and pursue new opportunities
• Mentor Graduate, Engineer and Senior Engineer colleagues; delegate work and provide guidance
• Contribute to fee proposals, bids and business development
• Support growth of the Leeds Structures team and client network
• Ensure compliance with design standards, health and safety, and Waterman Group quality procedures
• Promote sustainable and innovative design approaches across projects

Key requirements

• Significant consultancy experience in structural engineering
• Strong experience delivering building structures across sectors
• Excellent knowledge of structural design and analysis
• Experience leading projects and coordinating multidisciplinary teams
• Solid understanding of British Standards, Eurocodes and CDM requirements
• Excellent written and verbal communication with client-facing confidence
• Experience mentoring junior engineers
• Strong organisational and project management skills
• Commercial awareness and ability to manage budgets and resources
• Proactive, collaborative approach and interest in developing people and projects
• Desire to contribute to business development and growth of Waterman Group
