Lead Mechanical Design Engineer

Overview

As a Mechanical Design Engineer in the Sparkworks area, you lead mechanical design efforts on missile-related projects within a multidisciplinary team. You shape early development work through rapid prototyping and contribute to future research ideas and funding. The role combines hands-on engineering with stakeholder collaboration to solve challenging problems that advance our defence-focused portfolio. You will work in a dynamic, security-conscious environment with opportunities to influence direction and scale impact.

Responsibilities

• Act as Mechanical Lead for assigned projects, providing engineering expertise
• Contribute to early-stage development and rapid prototyping of designs
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to align mechanical solutions with project goals
• Propose ideas for future research topics and secure funding within the function
• Communicate with stakeholders across the business to influence design decisions

Key requirements

• Strong understanding of Mechanical Design with emphasis on Structural and Thermal considerations
• Ability to develop concept designs from limited information and changing requirements
• 3D CAD/CAE experience (training on preferred CAE tools provided)
• Good written and verbal communication skills; ability to influence and negotiate with stakeholders across the business
• Wider awareness of Electronic Packaging and Low Observability is beneficial
