Design Engineer

Overview

As a Major Projects Design Engineer, you will deliver detailed estimates for client projects pre- and post-order, while maintaining existing contracts and pursuing new opportunities. You’ll design fire safety and electronic security systems, ensuring BS Compliant Design standards and coordinated technical designs. You act as an ambassador for a leading specialist system integrator, building strong client relationships and driving profitable outcomes. This role combines design, estimation, and business development in a collaborative, field-facing environment.

Responsibilities

• Prepare cost budgets and estimates for new contracts
• Keep existing contracts up to date and amend as needed
• Produce detailed technical designs achieving Construction stage approval (Status A or B)
• Adhere to standards to maximise profit and customer satisfaction while minimising risk
• Prepare well-written client proposals with competitive cost estimates and documentation
• Maintain relationships with existing clients and seek new business opportunities
• Collaborate with delivery team for development, innovation, and creativity on client projects
• Maintain detailed design and estimation records, including site assessments and contract terms
• Prepare and submit accurate cost/sales documents and client schedules of rates
• Balance multiple proposals to meet deadlines
• Liaise with other departments to drive business development and profitable outcomes
• Follow Health & Safety procedures and comply with ISO:9001:2015 & ISO 14001:2004

Key requirements

• Experience in designing/engineering fire safety and electronic security systems
• Knowledge of BS Compliant Design requirements
• Familiarity with Aspirating Smoke Detection System design software
• Knowledge of enterprise level Electronic Security Systems and integrated Security Management systems
• Conversant with IT systems (Microsoft Office, AutoCAD)
• Ability to understand technical specifications
• Strong communicator with excellent relationship-building and customer service skills
• Self-motivated, detail-oriented, able to work independently
• Valid driving license and ability to visit client sites
• Sales and networking skills; technical document/proposal writing experience preferred
