Overview

As an Instrumentation & I&C/Industrial Automation Engineer, you will contribute to multidisciplinary energy and resources projects across North America. You’ll design and implement automation and instrumentation, from early proposals through commissioning, in sectors like mining, power, oil & gas, and renewables. You will work within a collaborative team to deliver safe, reliable control systems and integration of vendor equipment. This role offers leadership opportunities and hands-on field and design work that shapes complex projects. Responsibilities

• Provide engineering support across the project lifecycle from proposals to commissioning
• Perform site work including investigations, scope validation, and start-up support
• Lead I&C construction drawing deliverables (diagrams, layouts, installation drawings) and collaborate with designers
• Specify instrumentation and datasheets; support procurement through evaluation and recommendations
• Design PLC/DCS/HMI/SCADA architectures and integrate third-party systems
• Coordinate integration of vendor-supplied equipment and design control rooms and networks
• Develop functional specs, control logic, and safety interlocks; establish setpoints and alarms
• Perform I&C calculations (UPS, loads, bandwidth) and support project delivery and quality control
• Prepare technical specs for industrial networks and fiber/Wi‑Fi/LTE connectivity
• Assist with Construction Work Packages and lead deliverable reviews in collaboration with clients and contractors
• Support design verification, QA/QC, and value engineering during design reviews
• Participate in client meetings and multidisciplinary design reviews
• Travel to client sites or Stantec offices (~10%) as needed

Key requirements

• Self-starter with ability to work with minimal supervision
• Strong written and verbal communication and team collaboration
• Mining project experience is an asset
• Demonstrated ability to produce accurate, organized work and perform quality checks
• Proficiency with MS Office; ability to learn software tools quickly
• Experience in multidisciplinary team environments and remote collaboration (MS Teams)
• Underground mine design experience is an asset
• Willingness to travel ~10% to client sites or offices
• Bachelor’s degree in engineering; PE license or ability to obtain one
• 5–10 years of engineering, design, and construction experience in heavy industry, mining, oil & gas, or power generation
