Software Engineer, Backend

Overview

In this role you will lead the technical delivery of backend software within a permanent feature team, shaping solutions across business, applications, data and infrastructure. You’ll collaborate with principal engineers, architects, and stakeholders to ensure the platform supports business objectives. You will evaluate design options, guide estimation and planning, and apply Agile methods to deliver resilient software. You’ll drive architecture and enable automated build, test, and deployment, with a focus on scalable, future-ready systems. Responsibilities

• Lead technical delivery of a software engineering team
• Liaise with principal engineers, architects, and stakeholders to align platform work with business objectives
• Supervise solution design options and communicate pros/cons for decisions
• Lead estimation activities and ensure plans reflect technical complexity and maintainability
• Apply Agile methods to backend development and backlog management
• Produce resilient, long-lived software and adapt to future needs
• Deliver intentional architecture and emergent design through experimentation and prototyping
• Design and develop software with emphasis on automated build, test, and deployment processes

Key requirements

• Banking or financial services experience
• Strong hands-on Java experience
• Experience designing and developing microservices and distributed systems
• Relational databases experience (Oracle or PostgreSQL)
• AWS cloud experience
• Experience implementing programming best practices around scalability, automation, virtualisation, optimisation, availability and performance
• Strong problem-solving skills translating business requirements into scalable solutions
• Good collaboration and stakeholder management
• Knowledge of information security policies in the financial sector
• Exposure to AI technologies (LLMs, ML, or agentic systems) and mentoring/leading engineers
• Familiarity with Spring Boot, Kafka, Kubernetes, and Agile delivery practices
