Overview

In this role you will lead the technical design and delivery of medium-to-large features, shaping software that is robust, scalable, and secure. You will work closely with cross-functional teams, mentor peers, and take ownership of end-to-end stories to drive reliable outcomes. The role emphasizes Java-based solutions, cloud infrastructure, and data-driven decision making, with a focus on growth and technical leadership. This is a steppingstone for further senior progression, aligned with Tesco’s standards and security practices.

Responsibilities

• Develop high-quality software solutions with Java (Spring Boot or other frameworks)
• Work with Microsoft Azure and Terraform (IaC) or be willing to learn
• Implement and advocate CI/CD best practices
• Maintain high-quality documentation to support development and system design
• Utilize data-driven decision making and balance short- and long-term goals
• Apply Tesco architectural standards and best practices including security-first thinking and vulnerability tools (Snyk, Apiiro)
• Ensure solutions are robust, scalable, and efficient
• Take ownership of systems, driving reliability, maintainability, and performance
• Mentor and support fellow engineers to foster growth and collaboration
• Automate workflows and build tools/scripts to improve efficiency

Key requirements

• Solid experience delivering Java or other JVM languages
• Experience with cloud platforms (Azure, AWS) and Terraform
• Understanding of SQL (PostgreSQL) and NoSQL databases (Cosmos DB)
• Familiarity with monitoring/alerting tools (Splunk, xMatters, New Relic)
• Experience with Agile methodologies (Scrum/Kanban)
• Good English communication skills
• Experience in system design
