Overview

In this role you will lead the design of highway schemes in London, staying hands-on with technical delivery while mentoring junior engineers. You will work on TfL and borough projects, ensuring designs are safe, buildable and compliant. You’ll act as Design Lead across multiple projects and manage design milestones within a supportive, collaborative team. The opportunity combines technical delivery with people development and client-facing coordination, contributing to high-profile urban infrastructure. You will shape outcomes on strategic highway improvements across the capital.

Responsibilities

  • Produce and review highway design drawings, specifications and technical reports
  • Act as Design Lead across multiple concurrent highway projects
  • Lead design activities from concept through delivery
  • Manage project programmes and ensure milestones are achieved
  • Mentor and develop engineers, graduates and technicians
  • Ensure designs are safe, buildable and compliant with standards
  • Support Principal Designer duties under CDM regulations
  • Liaise with clients, stakeholders and internal teams
  • Provide technical guidance, design assurance and quality reviews
  • Support commercial performance and delivery against framework requirements

Key requirements

  • Proven experience delivering highways design projects in London or similar urban environments
  • Strong knowledge of UK highway design standards and legislation
  • Experience in consultancy, contractor or framework delivery environments
  • Experience designing carriageway, footway, cycling, bus priority and public realm schemes
  • Good understanding of CDM Regulations and highway safety requirements
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Strong commercial awareness and programme management capability
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and industry-standard highway design software
