Design Engineer – Rail &Civils

Overview

In this Design Engineer role, you will deliver safe, practical, and economical designs for internal clients while adhering to company procedures. You will collaborate with SHQE on health, safety, and environmental matters and interface with design teams to ensure high professional standards. The role involves site visits, design reviews, and coaching team members to uphold quality and compliance. You will translate requirements into conceptual and detailed designs, check work, and support tendering and change control processes. This is an opportunity to impact high-profile London and South East projects within a dynamic main contractor environment.

Responsibilities

• Promote best practice in health, safety and environment with the SHQE department
• Coordinate with external or in-house design teams on behalf of the Design Manager
• Liaise with other departments and project teams regarding design requirements
• Undertake site visits when appropriate
• Ensure design work complies with procedures and maintains professionalism
• Identify and record chargeable work with time-tracking
• Capture and archive feedback on design work
• Coach staff members
• Create conceptual designs for safe, practical, and economical solutions
• Prepare detailed designs with calculations, risk assessments, and working drawings
• Review others’ design work and external designers
• Summarise design task quantities for pricing
• Manage storage and archiving of design documents
• Provide design and operational guidance
• Assist with design tenders and sub-contracts
• Administer and monitor Change Controls
• Produce monthly progress reports
• Implement Temporary Works requirements and registers
• Deliver design or checking services to company standards
• Attend monthly site progress meetings

Key requirements

• Proven construction design experience
• Strong computer skills including Microsoft Excel
• Experience with AutoCad and TEDDS
• Working knowledge of CDM 2007
