Group Financial Controller

Overview

In this role you will lead Canonical’s accounting governance and financial reporting, ensuring accurate, timely information and robust controls as we scale globally. You will partner with cross-functional teams to drive process improvements, system upgrades, and responsible AI-enabled finance workflows. You’ll steer audits, regulatory compliance, and data integrity while shaping the finance function for public-market readiness. This is a high-impact, strategic role in a pioneering, distributed tech company.

Responsibilities

• Oversee risk management and design/monitor controls to mitigate process risks
• Lead policy and procedure improvements to enable scalable operations
• Drive compliance monitoring of policies and processes
• Support multi-functional change projects to enhance systems, processes, and data accuracy
• Manage reviews of balance sheet reconciliations, management accounts, and statutory accounts for timely reporting
• Ensure accuracy and completeness of financial data recording and reporting
• Uphold accounting and approval processes and controls across the organization
• Manage external audits and coordinate with auditors
• Develop understanding of evolving regulatory frameworks and ensure regulatory compliance
• Lead finance system upgrades and sensible AI adoption within the team
• Build professional relationships with internal and external stakeholders and resolve questions confidentially
• Mentor junior accounting staff and promote best practices

Key requirements

• Strong academic background and professional accounting qualification (ACA/ACCA/CIMA/CPA)
• Extensive practical IFRS knowledge
• Advanced Excel skills and data analysis capabilities
• Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills, with ability to meet tight deadlines
• Confident communication and interpersonal skills for diverse stakeholders
• Proactive, analytical mindset with focus on continuous improvement
• Proven experience using enterprise-level accounting/ERP systems
• Results-driven with commitment to meeting/exceeding goals
• Ability to travel internationally up to twice per year for events
