Protection and Control Engineer

Overview

In this role you will design and implement protection and control schemes for battery energy storage systems, ensuring safe and efficient grid integration. You’ll work within a project-focused team to calibrate relays, develop settings, and coordinate with SCADA and communications networks. You’ll model systems, perform fault analysis, and stay current with standards shaping BESS protection. This position offers hands-on problem solving in a fast-paced energy storage environment and significant impact on reliability and safety of utility-scale assets.

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement protection and control schemes for BESS applications
• Perform relay coordination studies, settings development, and protection scheme design
• Conduct system modeling and analysis using ETAP, PSCAD, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, Aspen, or CYME
• Design, test, and commission protective relays, SCADA systems, and communication networks
• Work with IEC 61850, DNP3, Modbus, and other industry communication protocols
• Coordinate with internal teams and external stakeholders for seamless integration
• Perform fault analysis, root cause investigation, and provide solutions for BESS failures
• Assist in developing functional specifications, control logics, and operating procedures
• Stay updated on best practices and regulatory requirements related to BESS protection and control

Key requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or related field
• Experience in protection and control engineering, preferably in power systems, renewable energy, or battery energy storage
• Hands-on experience with protective relays (SEL, ABB, Siemens, GE, Schneider) and relay programming
• Proficiency in power system analysis tools such as ETAP, PSCAD, DIgSILENT, or PSS/E
• Strong knowledge of grid codes, IEEE, IEC, NERC, and interconnection requirements
• Familiarity with SCADA, RTUs, HMI, and PLCs in power system applications
• Experience with NERC PRC compliance and protection coordination studies is a plus
• Ability to interpret single-line diagrams, schematics, and control logic diagrams
• Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to work in a fast-paced environment
