Job Description:

The Role

Triple Eight Race Engineering is seeking an experienced Race Engineer to join our Supercars engineering team.

In this role, you will have primary engineering responsibility for a specific race car, working closely with the driver and the broader engineering team to translate vehicle data, simulation, testing and driver feedback into measurable improvements in vehicle performance and lap time.

This is a full-time, trackside role, requiring attendance at all Supercars events and additional testing programs. Between events, the role will involve workshop-based engineering, data analysis, simulation, vehicle development and performance optimisation.

The successful candidate will play a key role in the performance of the race car, from preparation and testing through to race weekend execution and post-event analysis.

Key Responsibilities

Vehicle Performance & Setup

  • Contribute to the performance and ongoing development of the race car, including the optimisation of vehicle setup and systems.
  • Engineer the car at race events and test days, including developing run plans, making setup decisions and leading technical debriefs.
  • Maintain the technical legality and compliance of the race car in accordance with Supercars technical regulations.
  • Establish and maintain a strong, professional working relationship with the driver, integrating driver feedback with objective vehicle data to determine setup direction.
  • Identify vehicle performance opportunities and develop practical engineering solutions to improve car performance.

Data Analysis, Simulation & Correlation

  • Analyse vehicle data from testing and race events to identify performance trends, opportunities and areas for improvement.
  • Utilise simulation, statistical analysis and modelling techniques to investigate vehicle behaviour and predict performance.
  • Correlate simulation outputs, rig testing and track results, ensuring findings are accurately reflected in vehicle models.
  • Translate engineering analysis into practical setup changes and measurable improvements in vehicle performance and lap time.
  • Plan and execute track testing and engineering experiments, including establishing test objectives, methodologies and instrumentation requirements.
  • Maintain accurate engineering records and ensure relevant findings are communicated effectively across the engineering team.

Team & Capability Development

  • Work collaboratively across design, simulation, testing, data engineering and vehicle performance functions.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of engineering processes, tools and methodologies.
  • Support the development and mentoring of junior engineers, contributing to the ongoing growth of the team’s technical capability.
  • Share knowledge and technical learnings across the wider engineering group.

Working Relationships

The Race Engineer will work closely with the Driver, Car Crew, Data Engineers, Head of Performance and Technical Director, as well as the wider engineering, design, simulation and operations teams.

The role requires strong collaboration across all areas of the business, with the ability to communicate complex technical information clearly and make effective decisions within a high-performance environment.

About You

Essential

  • Degree in Mechanical, Automotive, Mechatronic or a related engineering discipline.
  • Demonstrated professional motorsport experience in an engineering capacity, such as Race Engineering or Performance Engineering.
  • Strong understanding of vehicle dynamics, including tyres, kinematics, aerodynamics and powertrain, and their interaction with vehicle setup and performance.
  • Strong data interpretation, analytical and numerical skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish and maintain a strong working relationship with a professional driver.
  • Demonstrated ability to make sound engineering decisions under pressure within a fast-paced, high-performance environment.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities within demanding race and testing schedules.

Desirable

  • Experience with vehicle dynamics simulation, lap time simulation or driver-in-the-loop simulation.
  • Programming experience, particularly in languages or tools used for engineering analysis and data processing.
  • Experience applying statistical analysis or machine learning techniques to engineering and vehicle performance data.
  • Working knowledge of Supercars technical regulations.
  • Motorsport data analysis experience, particularly using MoTeC.
  • Postgraduate qualification in Motorsport Engineering, Vehicle Dynamics or a related discipline.
  • Experience working within a professional Supercars or comparable high-level motorsport environment.
