Overview
In this role you will support the design and delivery of highways and transportation schemes in the West Midlands, working with a team of engineers to produce high-quality technical outputs. Responsibilities
- Assist in the design and development of highways and transportation schemes across feasibility, preliminary, and detailed design stages
- Produce highways designs, drawings, calculations, and schedules in line with DMRB, Manual for Streets, and local authority requirements
- Prepare technical information for reports, specifications, and tender documentation
- Coordinate highways design inputs with drainage, structures, and utilities
- Respond to technical queries under guidance from Senior Engineers
- Support construction phases with technical clarifications, site queries, and design updates
- Carry out design checks and reviews on own work for accuracy and compliance
- Maintain organized design records, calculations, and technical files
- Assist with data collection, site visits, surveys, and analyses to inform design
- Support optioneering and feasibility studies with sketches and comparative assessments
- Contribute to risk assessments and design risk reviews under supervision
- Develop proficiency in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MicroDrainage or similar
- Actively pursue professional accreditation (EngTech or IEng, path to CEng)
- Promote safe working practices and good communication within project teams
Key requirements
- Degree qualified in civil engineering or similar
- Experience in highways design and delivery across feasibility to detailed design stages
- Familiarity with design standards (DMRB, Manual for Streets) and local authority requirements
- Ability to prepare technical information and coordinate with multi-disciplinary teams
- Willingness to develop professional accreditation
