Overview

As an underwriter in our Business Insurance team for UK & Ireland, you drive profitable growth by assessing risk and securing new business with key brokers. You will manage a broker-facing portfolio, negotiate terms, and expand lines of business while maintaining strong risk controls. You will travel to industry events and partner with cross-functional teams to support renewal and retention strategies. This role sits at the heart of Travelers’ broker-focused strategy, combining analytical decision-making with commercial negotiation. You will help shape underwriting reviews and contribute to sustainable profitability across our portfolio.

Responsibilities

  • Underwrite and negotiate moderate risks to balance profitability and risk
  • Proactively manage portfolio to hit KPI targets and pursue new business
  • Collaborate with Manager/Team to address risk characteristics identified in Portfolio Management
  • Identify opportunities to write additional lines of business using product knowledge and appetite
  • Utilise technology platforms to quote and bind efficiently
  • Support underwriting reviews and manage action points for policies or portfolios
  • Cultivate relationships with internal partners and cross-sell within the enterprise
  • Maintain broker relationships via phone, email and other channels to market Travelers products and grow accounts
  • Travel to meetings and attend industry conferences as required
  • Develop pipeline plans and support renewal team in retention aligned with sales plans
  • Train and mentor less experienced underwriters and assist junior team members

Key requirements

  • A Levels or similar qualification
  • Good knowledge of products, regulatory environment, and local insurance market
  • Analytical/critical thinking in underwriting, market products, and risk assessment
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills for broker negotiations
  • Ability to work with diverse teams and cultures
  • Experience in trading and developing broker relationships
  • Underwriting experience with product and financial analysis
