Overview

As a Senior Rail Drainage Engineer, you will lead drainage design packages for rail and infrastructure projects, delivering robust surface water, foul water, SuDS and earthworks solutions. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure integrated, technically sound outcomes and support stakeholder approvals. You’ll mentor junior engineers and provide technical leadership on high-profile schemes, influencing drainage strategy and project delivery. This is a hands-on role with a clear path to chartership and career progression in a collaborative, client-facing environment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the delivery of drainage design packages for rail and infrastructure projects
  • Produce and review drainage calculations, technical reports, drawings and specifications
  • Develop drainage solutions across surface water, foul water, SuDS, and earthworks
  • Utilise drainage software such as InfoDrainage and CivilStorm for modelling
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary design teams for seamless integration
  • Support approvals and consent applications with Local Authorities and Water Authorities
  • Identify and manage design risks ensuring compliance with industry standards
  • Mentor and support junior engineers and technicians
  • Liaise with clients and project stakeholders throughout delivery

Key requirements

  • Degree qualified in Civil Engineering or related discipline
  • Strong drainage design experience in infrastructure projects
  • Experience delivering surface water, foul water, SuDS and earthworks drainage
  • Proficiency with drainage design and hydraulic modelling software (InfoDrainage, CivilStorm or similar)
  • Experience producing and checking technical deliverables
  • Good understanding of drainage approvals and consent processes
  • Ability to provide technical leadership and guidance to junior team members
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Rail sector experience advantageous
  • Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status (or working towards) desirable
