Overview

As a Principal Design Engineer, you will lead the design and delivery of complex building services projects across multiple sectors. You’ll guide multidisciplinary teams, coordinate with architects and clients, and ensure compliant, high-quality outcomes from concept to completion. You’ll drive technical direction and sustainability efforts while supporting business development and client relationships. This role offers impact across projects and opportunities to shape low-carbon design strategies within a growing consultancy.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and delivery of building services projects from concept through to completion
  • Manage multidisciplinary engineering teams and coordinate with architects, contractors, and external stakeholders
  • Produce and review detailed engineering calculations, specifications, reports, and drawings
  • Provide technical leadership across HVAC, public health, electrical, or mechanical building services disciplines
  • Ensure compliance with current regulations, British Standards, and industry best practices
  • Attend client meetings and act as a technical lead throughout project lifecycles
  • Support business development activities, including fee proposals, presentations, and bid submissions
  • Manage project resources, budgets, and programme delivery
  • Mentor and develop junior and intermediate engineers
  • Contribute to sustainability initiatives, low-carbon design strategies, and net-zero projects

Key requirements

  • Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or a related discipline
  • Chartered Engineer status (CEng) or actively working towards Chartership
  • Extensive building services design experience within a consultancy environment
  • Strong technical knowledge of UK building regulations and relevant design standards
  • Proven experience leading projects and managing client relationships
  • Proficiency with industry-standard design software such as Amtech, Dialux, Relux, IES, Hevacomp, Revit, AutoCAD, or similar

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deliver within programme deadlines
