Overview
As a Principal Ground Investigation Engineer, you lead geotechnical investigations across the UK, guiding projects from inception to delivery. You mentor the team within Arcadis’ Ground Investigation capability and manage client relationships to win work. You will work with international technical experts and contribute to a growing, award-winning, global practice. This role offers flexibility in location and opportunities to shape ground investigation delivery across multiple sectors.
Responsibilities
- Lead bidding and opportunity identification to grow the ground investigation pipeline
- Plan and execute geotechnical ground investigations across the UK
- Coordinate supply chain and procurement activities
- Establish and maintain a strong safety culture on site
- Manage field-based works including site management, sampling, testing, and data collection
- Compile factual ground investigation reports and ensure quality deliverables
- Collaborate with cross-functional Arcadis teams to maintain project integrity
- Oversee deliverables, manage client expectations, and ensure compliance with standards
- Develop relationships with clients and internal stakeholders; communicate progress and risks
- Mentor and develop team members; support professional growth
- Promote innovation and adoption of digital technologies in project delivery
- Support monitoring and reporting on team performance for the head of Discipline
Key requirements
- BSc qualified (or higher) in Geology, Civil Engineering, or related subjects
- Minimum 10 years’ experience in ground investigation
- Strong safety leadership with hazard and risk management expertise
- Experience on site supervision of contractors (e.g., drillers)
- People management, communication, business development, contract management, project delivery
- Excellent problem-solving and negotiation abilities
- SMSTS preferable
- Proficient in factual ground investigation reporting
- Experience managing teams and stakeholders
- Professional membership and chartership desirable
- Rail / Highway / Energy sector experience desirable
