Design Lead

Overview

As Design Lead, you steer multi-disciplinary design for water sector projects, shaping affordable, low-carbon solutions and ensuring designs meet construction and client needs. You will lead a diverse design team, coordinate stakeholders, and uphold quality, schedule, and cost targets. This role sits at the heart of MMB’s Living Water Enterprise, delivering impactful water and wastewater improvements across the North East. You’ll influence project outcomes and contribute to environmental and community benefit.

Responsibilities

• Lead the delivery of multi-disciplinary design for projects/programmes
• Build and guide a team of electrical, mechanical, civil, and process designers
• Develop affordable, low-carbon solutions while managing opportunities and risks
• Deliver detailed designs that meet construction needs and client acceptance, controlling cost and schedule
• Challenge engineering solutions and delivery methods to ensure best value for the client
• Provide direction for project controls and ensure compliance with quality, programme, and cost requirements
• Maintain positive client relationships at project level

Key requirements

• Degree in Engineering
• Chartered or incorporated member of a professional institution (e.g., ICE, IMechE) or equivalent experience
• Outline and detailed design experience of water or wastewater projects; knowledge of Designer/Principal Designer duties under CDM 2015
• Strong technical knowledge in own discipline and awareness of other disciplines
