Senior Highways Engineer

Overview

In this role you will lead highway and drainage design efforts within an established infrastructure team. You will work closely with senior engineers and mentor junior colleagues, delivering multi-disciplinary schemes to agreed standards. The position covers Section 278/38 highway designs, estate roads, and ground modelling with geotechnical considerations, contributing to projects from planning through delivery. You will tackle varied challenges, from local authority liaison to design delivery, shaping safe, durable infrastructure.

Responsibilities

• Lead highway and drainage design tasks and deliver schemes to DMRB and Local Authority guidelines
• Contribute to Section 278/38 highway designs and residential/industrial access projects
• Perform ground modelling and earthworks design including geotechnical and environmental appraisal and pavement design
• Coordinate multi-disciplinary design work and ensure timely delivery
• Liaise with planning authorities, statutory undertakers, and national bodies
• Mentor and support junior staff and share expertise to raise team capability
• Manage multiple projects across different scales and communicate with clients and contractors

Key requirements

• 5+ years in a UK consultancy on highway and drainage design
• Experience in design delivery and multi-disciplinary projects
• Proficiency in AutoCAD and Civil 3D
• Knowledge of highway design standards, guidelines, and processes
• Strong communication skills with internal and external stakeholders
• Chartered or working towards ICE chartership
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
• Ability to multitask and manage a project portfolio
