Overview

In this role you will help translate laser and optics advances into a deployable naval air-defence capability. You will work within a defence programme to align research with system requirements, verification, and integration across laser, optical, and weapon components. You will analyze performance data, run capability assessments, and resolve technical challenges to deliver a high-quality mission-critical system. This is a cross-disciplinary, impact-driven position at the intersection of physics, optics and systems engineering, offering hands-on contribution to a cutting-edge defence technology. Responsibilities

  • Translate laser and optics technology into practical, reliable weapon system capability
  • Define and manage system requirements through the development lifecycle
  • Analyse system performance data and conduct capability assessments and engineering trades
  • Support integration of laser, optical and weapon system components
  • Contribute to design verification, certification and final system integration
  • Collaborate with scientists, engineers and stakeholders across the defence programme
  • Communicate complex laser physics and optics concepts to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Identify and resolve technical challenges to deliver a high-quality mission-critical system

Key requirements

  • PhD or significant industry experience in laser technology at system level
  • Strong understanding of laser physics and optics
  • Experience in data analysis and system performance assessment
  • Knowledge of systems integration and requirements engineering
  • Ability to conduct system capability trades and optimise complex product designs
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Persistent, driven and passionate approach to engineering and problem-solving
  • Defence experience advantageous
