Principal Mechanical Engineer

Overview

As Principal Mechanical Engineer, you will lead mechanical design for transformational programmes shaping critical UK infrastructure. You’ll guide cross-functional teams and collaborate with UK and overseas partners to deliver integrated, high-quality designs that meet standards. You’ll manage time, budgets and quality across the project lifecycle, from briefs and bids to delivery and interfaces with construction. This role offers exposure to iconic projects in water, energy and development, with a clear impact on safety, compliance and performance. You’ll work in a diverse, voice-led environment that values expertise and collaboration.

Responsibilities

• Lead a design team to deliver technical designs compliant with standards and codes
• Prepare briefs, scopes of work, and contribute to bid proposals
• Manage project timeframes and budgets to meet milestones
• Coordinate with UK and overseas teams for integrated design solutions
• Ensure adherence to QA standards in design

Key requirements

• Chartered Mechanical Engineer
• Water sector experience
• Experience leading design delivery including multidisciplinary design
• Strong knowledge of mechanical equipment (pumps, blowers, screens, chemical dosing)
• In-depth understanding of UK design standards and working practices
• Knowledge of CDM and ATEX legislation
