Overview

In this Mechanical Design Engineer role, you will design major components and sub-systems, prototype and prove designs, and produce technical documentation for manufacturability and compliance. You will collaborate with design authorities and SMEs to develop robust, high-integrity solutions suitable for harsh environments. The position emphasizes secure vetting, on-site work in Ampthill, and close coordination with manufacturing and purchasing teams. You will translate requirements into manufacturable products while adhering to industry standards and safety regulations. This is a hands-on, impact-driven role within a security-conscious engineering team.

Responsibilities

  • Design major components or subsystems and develop robust, manufacturable solutions
  • Prototype, design prove, and support calculations and engineering documentation
  • Create and review layouts, drawings, and data packs for standards and accuracy
  • Collaborate with SMEs, Users, and Design Authorities to finalize concept solutions
  • Coordinate with CAD engineers to generate drawings and data packages
  • Present Design Review data packs to senior engineers and governors
  • Assist with prototypes and verify designs with manufacturing/purchasing
  • Conduct physical testing and design proving on engineering prototypes
  • Ensure compliance with applicable standards, safety requirements, and legislation

Key requirements

  • DV clearance will be required; must be prepared to undergo vetting
  • Experience in defense, aerospace, or space domains is highly advantageous
  • Direct experience designing mechanical sub-systems and components
  • Experience defining electrical interfaces for sub-systems and components
  • Knowledge of materials, treatments, and finishing technologies for defence/aerospace/space
  • Proficient in CREO CAD and capable of producing complex parametric designs
  • Able to use Windchill PDM
  • Strong understanding of mechanism design and calculations
  • Proven track record delivering designs for harsh environments
  • Strong attention to design detail and rigorous documentation
  • Ability to plan, schedule, and work both independently and in teams
