Staff Product Engineer

Overview

As a Staff Engineer at Intercom, you will shape the technical direction of our engineering organization while delivering both backend and frontend systems. You’ll collaborate with design, product, research, and data teams to scale our SaaS platform and ensure reliability and agility. You’ll mentor engineers, contribute to architecture, and help drive engineering excellence and delivery. This role offers the chance to impact customers worldwide and advance Intercom’s mission of delivering incredible customer experiences.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to and shape the technical architecture as we scale to serve many customers
• Balance agility with scalability and availability, using incremental, feature-flagged deployments
• Participate in all software development phases, blending hands-on work with leadership/architecture
• Build with industry-leading tools and AI-powered developer solutions to reduce friction
• Play an active role in hiring, mentoring, and career development of engineers
• Raise the bar on technical standards, performance, reliability, and operational excellence

Key requirements

• Experience building a SaaS product with demonstrable impact on product or teams
• Deep knowledge of a high‑level programming language (e.g., Ruby, Python, Perl)
• Experience with distributed systems
• 2+ years as the primary technical leader for a team
• Experience collaborating with product teams and designers to deliver value to customers
