Senior/Principal/Associate Civil/Structural Engineer

Overview

As a Design Manager and technical lead in Ramboll’s UK Transmission & Distribution practice, you drive civil and structural design for substations, OHL foundations, and cable routes. You will mentor engineers, manage design risk and assurance, and shape proposals in client and marketing settings. You’ll lead training initiatives to raise capability within the T&D team and contribute to growing the service offering. This role blends technical authority with leadership to deliver major UK power infrastructure projects and foster innovation.

Responsibilities

• Act as Design Manager / Lead Engineer for T&D civil and structural projects
• Lead design delivery for substations, overhead line foundations, cable routes, and T&D infrastructure
• Ensure compliance with UK standards (Eurocodes, BS EN), National Grid / DNO specs, and CDM/Health & Safety requirements
• Review, approve, and mentor designs from junior engineers; oversee design risk management, technical assurance, and value engineering
• Lead the training strategy for civil and structural engineers in T&D; deliver technical training, design standards, and workshops; mentor graduates and mid-level engineers
• Attend client, bid and marketing meetings as the senior technical representative; support bid strategy, scope, technical proposals, and cost/programme input
• Build long-term relationships with DNOs, National Grid, ICPs, and EPC contractors
• Provide technical input to project planning, resourcing, and risk management; help grow the T&D service offering; support innovation and digital engineering

Key requirements

• BEng / MEng in Civil or Structural Engineering
• Chartered Engineer status (CEng / MIStructE / MICE)
• 10+ years’ experience in civil & structural engineering with strong T&D exposure
• Proven experience in Transmission & Distribution infrastructure including substations and power networks
• Experience with National Grid and DNOs (UK Power Networks, SSEN, SPEN, WPD, etc.)
• Experience in framework delivery environments
• Demonstrable experience as Lead Engineer, Design Manager, or Technical Authority
• Strong knowledge of UK design standards and Eurocodes; CDM Regulations
• Confident client-facing communicator; experience mentoring engineers
• Full UK driving licence
