Overview
In this role you will lead electrical layout design for substations (AIS/GIS up to 400kV) and related facilities, within JN Bentley’s BESS team. You collaborate with experienced engineers and mentor junior staff, delivering turnkey electrical designs in partnership with construction and commissioning teams. The position blends site, office and remote work as part of a cross-functional team supporting the Mott MacDonald Group. You’ll shape end-to-end design solutions for energy storage projects with a strong emphasis on grid integration and standards compliance.

Responsibilities
- Lead production of electrical layouts for substations (AIS/GIS up to 400kV) including LV layouts, switch rooms and control room layouts
- Coordinate system studies and ensure outputs are incorporated into detailed designs and equipment specs
- Develop specifications for major plant items (disconnectors, CTs, VTs, SAs, PIs) and approve manufacturer information
- Design equipment support structures for AIS equipment (66kV–400kV) and liaise with manufacturers
- Lead electrical design integration of inverters, BESS enclosures, PCS units, transformers and auxiliary systems to grid connection
- Produce site-wide ducting/cabling layout drawings and coordinate with other disciplines
- Develop earthing layouts from first principles across voltage levels
- Collaborate with installation/commissioning teams to ensure design is installed and tested as intended
- Contribute to standardised systems, processes, designs and specifications
Key requirements
- Degree/HND/HNC in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems Electrical preferred)
- Experience in primary electrical design within consultancy, contractor or utility in the Power industry
- Proven ability in HV AC power system design and electrical layout drawings for substations, switchrooms and balance of plant
- Working understanding of HV/EHV substation installation standards and TO/DNO specifications
- Knowledge of cable installation types and installation parameters
