Overview

In this role you will lead mechanical engineering activities for high-profile, safety-critical infrastructure projects within a regulated environment. You’ll collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to shape design, support option studies, and ensure delivery from concept through commissioning. The position emphasizes safety, governance, and technical assurance, with impact across construction, commissioning and decommissioning. Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage mechanical engineering activities across major infrastructure projects
  • Review and approve engineering designs, drawings and technical documentation
  • Support optioneering studies and development of innovative engineering solutions
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, contractors and key stakeholders
  • Support safety case development, hazard identification and risk management activities
  • Produce and review technical reports, assessments and engineering documentation
  • Provide technical assurance of contractor methods, risk assessments and work packages
  • Oversee construction, installation and deconstruction activities to ensure design compliance
  • Support commissioning and decommissioning activities, ensuring operational readiness
  • Drive compliance with Health, Safety, Environmental, Security and Quality standards
  • Contribute to technical guidance, knowledge sharing and professional development initiatives

Key requirements

  • Mechanical engineering experience on complex projects
  • Experience working in safety-critical or high-hazard environments
  • Design assurance, technical review and governance experience
  • Knowledge of the full engineering lifecycle, from design to commissioning
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and collaboration skills
  • Experience working within multi-disciplinary engineering teams
  • Experience within Defence, nuclear or other highly regulated sectors
  • Knowledge of HAZID, HAZOP and safety case processes
  • Understanding of relevant engineering standards and regulations
  • Experience supporting major infrastructure projects
  • Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status (desirable)
  • MSc or equivalent postgraduate qualification (desirable)
