Overview

As Environmental Specialist, you will support water and wastewater projects across the UK, ensuring environmental risks are identified and mitigated throughout the lifecycle. You’ll work with a cross‑functional team to integrate ecology, heritage, and permitting considerations into project plans. Your role helps protect communities and the environment while enabling delivery of major schemes. You’ll engage regulators and clients to build trusted relationships and drive sustainable outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Identify environmental risks across the project lifecycle from concept to completion
  • Support project teams with environmental risk mitigation considering cost, time, compliance, safety and social impacts
  • Plan and coordinate environmental inputs (heritage, archaeology, ecology, geomorphology) ensuring timely, standards-aligned outputs
  • Produce environmental deliverables at milestones (e.g., EIA screening, material management plans, environmental management plans)
  • Prepare applications for environmental permits and consents
  • Lead liaison with environmental regulators
  • Engage with clients on environmental and consenting matters and develop relationships
  • Contribute to environmental improvement projects at local and regional levels
  • Assist in the production and delivery of training

Key requirements

  • Chartered with a relevant professional body or actively working towards chartership
  • Understanding of environmental disciplines and project risks (ecology, archaeology, drainage, geotechnical, contaminated land, landscape, noise); deeper knowledge in at least one area is desirable
  • Awareness of planning processes (water sector) and permits/consents for construction activities
  • Ability to coordinate environmental aspects through planning, organisation, and communication to ensure successful outcomes
  • Experience advising on sustainability initiatives with biodiversity net gain understanding
  • Effective communication with team members and stakeholders
