Overview

In this role you’ll lead and deliver mine waste projects within WSP’s UK&I Mine Waste team, with opportunities to contribute globally. You’ll guide multidisciplinary teams through concept to closure, focusing on tailings, water storage, and waste rock facilities. You’ll shape technical direction, manage client relations, and support business development across international projects. This is a hands-on leadership position that blends engineering excellence with strategy and mentoring, in a culture that values safety, diversity, and collaboration.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver consulting services for mine waste projects, including design and inspection of mine waste storage facilities and tailings deposits
  • Lead and contribute to the design and assessment of mine waste facilities from concept to closure
  • Provide specialised input on tailings management, water impoundments, waste rock dumps, soil mechanics, and related civil engineering work
  • Mentor and supervise junior staff while developing team technical excellence and commercial awareness
  • Manage project involvement (time, budget, quality) and assist project managers in successful delivery
  • Prepare technical reports, drawings, specifications, BOQs, and cost estimates
  • Contribute to team strategy and participate in global technical practice groups to elevate technical visibility
  • Engage in client liaison, proposals, and on-site representation; travel domestically and internationally as needed
  • Commit to WSP values, Code of Conduct, and health and safety policies
  • Develop and maintain client relationships and support construction of WSP designs
  • Participate in safety-sensitive fieldwork as required
  • Support career development and knowledge sharing within the Mine Waste team

Key requirements

  • Demonstrated technical leadership, collaboration, and project delivery experience
  • Broad experience in mine waste and tailings
  • Strong client service mindset and ability to deliver large multi-disciplinary projects on time and on budget
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills for technical, business development, and strategy contexts
  • Degree in civil/geotechnical engineering or engineering geology with emphasis on soil mechanics
  • Knowledge of national and international design guidelines and regulations
  • Mining/geotechnical experience related to mine waste disposal facilities
  • Ability to interpret results and use tools to monitor and design geotechnical structures for operational needs
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Chartered professional status with a relevant body
  • Willingness to travel in the UK and internationally
