Overview
In this role you will lead mechanical design for water sector projects within a global consultancy focused on sustainable infrastructure. You’ll drive projects from feasibility to construction, collaborating with cross-functional teams and stakeholders to deliver reliable pumping and water systems. You’ll provide technical leadership to the Flood and Coastal Mechanical team and mentor junior engineers, shaping resilient, compliant solutions. This hybrid role offers exposure to high-impact projects addressing climate and ecological challenges.

Responsibilities
- Lead mechanical design across project lifecycle from feasibility to construction support
- Size and design pumping and water systems, produce specs and reports
- Coordinate with project managers, design engineers, clients and contractors to ensure project outcomes
- Provide construction and commissioning services and support site surveys/investigations
- Support development of junior engineers and provide technical leadership
- Contribute to design outputs in collaboration with other disciplines (GA drawings, 3D models, control philosophies, P&ID)
- Lead and participate in safety reviews (HAZOPs, ALMs) and collaborative design workshops
- Assess existing site infrastructure and understand lowland drainage pumping operations
- Incorporate Eel Regulations 2009 considerations into flood/coastal pumping station design
- Contribute to energy, infrastructure & water sector projects with a proactive, client-focused approach
Key requirements
- Experienced Mechanical Engineer; ideally chartered with IMechE
- Experience in mechanical design and pumping systems; pump station optioneering, design, construction management and commissioning
- Strong communication and presentation skills; capable of client-facing discussions
- Ability to provide engineering input across disciplines and deliver technical outputs (specifications, reports)
- Experience with design outputs (GA drawings, 3D models, control philosophies, P&ID) and safety reviews
- Knowledge of Eel Regulations 2009 and its implications for pumping stations
- Willingness to lead and develop junior engineers; collaborative working style
- Background in energy, infrastructure, or water sectors (preferred)
