Overview

As Structural Design Engineer, you develop creative, practical designs to restore damaged buildings, with a focus on sub-structure works and sustainable repair solutions. You’ll work in a collaborative design office, guiding projects from drawings to permissions and site monitoring. You will balance engineering rigor with innovative approaches, including net-zero initiatives, while mentoring colleagues and supporting cross‑functional teams. This role combines hands-on design with impactful, client-facing delivery in a flexible, home-based setting.

Responsibilities

  • Develop structural design solutions for damaged buildings (fires, floods, subsidence)
  • Produce detailed design drawings and obtain necessary permissions
  • Design and specify sub-structure schemes; balance rigour with practical outcomes
  • Utilise CAD daily for production of drawings
  • Engage with stakeholders at senior levels and influence project direction
  • Coordinate with Design Office Manager and wider team; provide training and share knowledge
  • Visit sites to monitor schemes and validate designs
  • Contribute to environmentally sustainable repair approaches and net-zero initiatives

Key requirements

  • Sub-structure expertise — design and specification of schemes
  • Engineering degree or equivalent
  • CAD proficiency for detailed drawings
  • Senior influence — ability to engage with senior stakeholders
  • Organised and methodical with excellent attention to detail
  • IT literate — Windows-based tools including Word, Excel, Outlook
  • Clear communicator with diverse audiences
