Overview

In this senior role, you will lead the health, safety and building safety function for a major UK contractor, shaping strategy, policy and culture. You’ll sustain ISO 45001 certification, ensure Building Safety Act 2022 compliance, and advise Directors on risk and governance. You will manage a team, drive improvements across live sites, and collaborate with regulators and pre-construction teams. This is an influential role with broad impact on safety, quality and project delivery.

Responsibilities

  • Set and evolve the company-wide Health & Safety strategy across all operations
  • Maintain ISO 45001 certification and drive continual improvement of the H&S management system
  • Ensure compliance with UK H&S legislation, CDM Regulations and Building Safety Act 2022
  • Oversee Higher-Risk Buildings (HRBs), Safety Case Reports and the Golden Thread of Information
  • Act as senior H&S advisor to Directors and senior leadership
  • Lead and develop the H&S team, fostering CPD and high performance
  • Oversee site inspections, audits and corrective action implementation
  • Develop and review H&S policies, procedures and systems
  • Lead incident investigations and implement lessons learned across the business
  • Liaise with regulators, auditors and certifying bodies
  • Support pre-construction teams with H&S input for bids and submissions
  • Produce monthly H&S reports for the Board and drive company-wide H&S communications
  • Champion a proactive safety culture through visible leadership and continuous improvement

Key requirements

  • Chartered IOSH member (CMIOSH)
  • Extensive senior H&S leadership experience in the UK construction industry
  • Proven track record with main contractors on new build projects; refurbishment/regeneration experience beneficial
  • Strong understanding of residential, commercial, mixed-use or public sector construction
  • Proven experience implementing ISO 45001 and managing H&S across multiple live sites
  • Thorough knowledge of UK H&S legislation, CDM and Building Safety Act 2022
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills
  • Ability to mentor and develop H&S teams within a multi-project environment
  • Strong commercial awareness and balance between delivery and compliance
