Overview

In this role you will provide independent review and assurance of civil and structural designs on Energy Transmission projects within WSP’s Design Assurance team. You will collaborate with design leads and multidisciplinary teams to ensure compliance with standards and client requirements, combining hands-on design with verification and governance across the project lifecycle. The position develops toward Design Assurance, Checker, or Independent Reviewer roles, offering opportunities to shape critical infrastructure. Responsibilities

  • Support technical review and assurance of civil and structural designs for compliance with project requirements and standards
  • Develop understanding of design assurance principles, including checking, verification processes, and governance frameworks
  • Perform independent reviews of calculations, drawings, specifications, and 3D models for accuracy and buildability
  • Assist in delivering civil and structural design packages while sustaining practical design experience
  • Contribute to structured design review processes, including interdisciplinary reviews and constructability assessments
  • Identify and manage technical risks, assumptions, and constraints, communicating them clearly
  • Participate in multidisciplinary coordination and model reviews (BIM) and clash detection
  • Liaise with design teams, contractors, and stakeholders to challenge and verify design intent
  • Support compliance with UK and international codes and governance (ISO 19650, CDM)
  • Contribute to lessons learned, standards development, and continuous improvement of design assurance processes
  • Support bid/tender activities by defining design assurance strategies and resourcing
  • Gain exposure to certification, verification, and independent checking in regulated energy projects

Key requirements

  • Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering or related discipline
  • Working towards Chartered Engineer status (CEng)
  • Experience in civil and structural design in energy, power, infrastructure sectors
  • Understanding of design processes across feasibility to detailed design stages
  • Familiarity with Eurocodes and UK standards; awareness of compliance and assurance requirements
  • Experience with structural analysis tools and BIM/CAD platforms (Robot, STAAD, Tekla, Revit, AutoCAD, Civil 3D)
  • Awareness of design review, checking, and verification processes
  • Experience in multidisciplinary teams and coordination with other disciplines
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication; ability to challenge designs and present findings
  • Awareness of construction methodologies, temporary works, and CDM Regulations
  • Experience in energy transmission, major infrastructure, or industrial projects desired
  • Exposure to substation design or regulated environments advantageous
