Overview

As an Associate Protection & Control Engineer in the UK Energy business, you will lead the delivery of protection and control solutions for transmission and distribution projects, guiding multidisciplinary teams and upholding client standards. You will support National Grid BP141 and CDAE activities, while developing the protection & control capability and mentoring engineers. The role blends technical leadership with client engagement and growth activities to shape essential infrastructure for the UK’s net-zero transition. Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership for protection and control systems on transmission and distribution projects
  • Lead BP141 Authorised Engineer and CDAE activities ensuring design compliance
  • Mentor and develop engineers across experience levels
  • Engage with clients and represent WSP in technical discussions and governance
  • Support growth of the Protection & Control capability through recruitment and bidding
  • Foster a collaborative, inclusive team culture and knowledge sharing
  • Oversee reviews of protection designs, calculations, specifications, and documents
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary teams to deliver project objectives
  • Support tendering, planning, installation, commissioning, and handover phases
  • Drive innovation and continuous improvement within the discipline
  • Assist with resource management and team utilisation
  • Stay updated on emerging technologies and client requirements

Key requirements

  • Degree qualification in Electrical Engineering
  • Extensive experience in design and delivery of protection and control schemes in transmission/distribution
  • Strong knowledge of electrical networks, standards and protection philosophies
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams on complex projects
  • Experience reviewing and approving technical documentation and calculations
  • Knowledge of ABB/Hitachi Energy, Siemens Energy and GE Vernova equipment
  • Understanding of IEC 61850 and IEC 60870 protocols
  • Experience mentoring engineers and supporting their development
  • Experience engaging clients and supporting project governance and business development
  • Chartered Engineer or working towards Chartership
  • National Grid BP141 Authorisation or working towards authorisation
  • Experience with Design Assurance or CDAE responsibilities (advantageous)
