Overview

As an Operations Officer, you will help lead frontline Waste and Street Scene services across North Yorkshire, ensuring safe, efficient delivery to residents and businesses. You will bridge Richmond and Northallerton, coordinating resources and tackling real-time operational challenges while supporting service improvements. You’ll provide leadership to teams, oversee compliance with health and safety, transport regulations, and council policies, and drive effective decision-making in a fast-paced environment. This role offers a hands-on opportunity to shape service quality and community impact, with a clear focus on safety, efficiency and staff development.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure work allocated to Waste and Street Scene Teams meets high standards
  • Coordinate mandatory training and implement schedules with colleagues
  • Identify opportunities for service improvement, efficiencies and innovation
  • Monitor service performance and make recommendations to increase efficiency
  • Ensure health and safety compliance and safe systems of work
  • Provide leadership to teams and agency staff on legal requirements
  • Motivate teams to deploy best practices through appraisals and regular dialogue
  • Monitor performance, address conduct and attendance, and support staff development

Key requirements

  • Experience in waste management, street cleansing, parks or related operational environment
  • Experience supervising or managing staff
  • Knowledge of health and safety legislation and compliance
  • Experience operating and/or managing Operator Licence vehicles
  • Strong organisational and resource-planning skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to make decisions and prioritise under pressure
  • Knowledge of transport legislation, driver hours regulations and licence categories
  • Full UK driving licence
