Overview

As Mechanical Design Engineer (Components), you translate ideas into precision automotive components from prototype to production. You will lead feasibility reviews, create CAD models and manufacturing documentation, and support ramp-up with cross-functional teams. The role focuses on delivering quality, cost targets, and on-time delivery in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. You will shape pre-production processes and drive improvements, leveraging your design and GD&T expertise. This is a hands-on role with meaningful impact on OE components.

Responsibilities

  • Develop CAD concepts using CATIA V5 (surface, solid, 2D) based on data and packaging constraints
  • Assess feasibility, cost, and capability with internal teams and suppliers
  • Lead design feasibility reviews ensuring standards are met
  • Create detailed CAD models for prototype manufacture and approval
  • Create/update Manufacturing Feasibility Report (MFR) across project stages
  • Develop and validate process flows, PFMEA, Control Plans, and SOPs for pre-production
  • Manage prototype builds and liaise with suppliers, tooling, and manufacturing
  • Oversee finalisation of designs for production release with GD&T and tolerance stack-ups
  • Support production ramp-up and drive continuous improvement initiatives

Key requirements

  • Mechanical Design Engineer or similar role in design/manufacturing
  • Experience in automotive, chemical, mining, rail, aerospace, marine, or military sectors
  • NPI and process development background
  • Proficiency in CATIA V5 for 3D modelling and 2D drawings
  • Strong GD&T, datum structures, and manufacturing process knowledge
  • Degree or HND in Mechanical/Manufacturing/Production Engineering
  • Familiarity with APQP, PFMEA, Control Plans, and Lean manufacturing
  • Experience in Tier 1 or OEM automotive environments
  • Knowledge of IATF 16949 quality systems
  • Excellent organisational skills and ability to manage multiple projects
