Overview
In this Building Physics Engineer role, you contribute expert building performance and energy modelling to UK projects within a multidisciplinary team. You’ll help optimise energy strategies, assess facade performance, and ensure compliance with UK standards while supporting early design decisions. The role blends hands-on modelling with collaboration across MEP, architecture and sustainability teams to deliver low-carbon, high-performing buildings. A key hook is shaping design through robust physics analysis in a net-zero context.
Responsibilities
- Contribute to building physics workstreams: thermal, energy, daylighting, overheating, natural ventilation and comfort analysis
- Develop and optimise energy strategies, operational energy assessments (TM54), and low-carbon design solutions
- Assess façade performance, passive design, solar control and fabric optimisation
- Ensure compliance with Part L, TM52/TM59, EPC; contribute to BREEAM/WELL/LEED credits
- Produce technical reports and clearly communicate findings to internal teams and clients
- Collaborate with MEP, architecture, sustainability, and digital engineering teams to integrate building physics
- Provide input on early-stage design decisions: massing, orientation, glazing ratios, shading, natural ventilation feasibility
- Support adoption of digital modelling workflows and best practices
- Mentor junior engineers and participate in knowledge-sharing sessions
Key requirements
- Experience in building physics, energy modelling, or building performance analysis in a consultancy
- Proficiency with IES-VE (or equivalent) including simulation, calibration and QA
- Strong understanding of passive design, low-carbon buildings, façade performance and building environmental behaviour
- Ability to deliver multidisciplinary projects and clearly present technical information to teams
- Desirable: exposure to net-zero strategies, operational energy modelling, heat decarbonisation, or embodied carbon analysis
- Familiarity with parametric modelling, digital workflows, or automation tools
- Experience mentoring junior engineers
- Degree in Building Physics, Mechanical/Environmental Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or related field
- Chartership (CEng) via CIBSE, IMechE, or equivalent is desirable but not essential
- Communication of complex technical concepts
- Collaborative mindset across multidisciplinary teams
- Mentoring and knowledge sharing
- IES-VE or equivalent
- Building physics and energy modelling
- Passive design and low-carbon building concepts
