Overview
As Director, Credit Risk, you will lead Airwallex’s global second-line oversight of credit, FX, and counterparty risk to enable safe, scalable growth. You’ll set risk guardrails and govern exposures across merchant acquiring, cards, FX, treasury, and banking partnerships, while challenging first-line decisions. You’ll partner with Product, Engineering, and Commercial teams to assess risk in new products and markets. This role combines strategic governance with hands-on risk leadership in a fast-moving, multi-currency environment.
Responsibilities
- Define and enhance the global second-line credit risk framework, including policies, risk appetite, limits, and governance across products and entities
- Oversee credit exposures across merchant acquiring, cards, B2B, FX pre-funding, treasury-related exposures, and settlement
- Review underwriting strategies, risk policies, credit assessments, and limit-setting; escalate complex decisions
- Establish guardrails for FX exposures, monitor tolerances, and report risk positions
- Set standards for counterparty risk with banking partners, merchants, customers, and other counterparties
- Lead portfolio monitoring, identify emerging trends, and escalate material issues early
- Oversee loss mitigation strategies and remediation for deteriorating exposures
- Collaborate with Product, Engineering, Commercial, Treasury, Finance, and Operations on risk design of new products/markets
- Lead or support risk committee decisions, governance, and remediation plans
- Represent Credit Risk in regulatory examinations, audits, and partner reviews with clear materials for leadership
Key requirements
- 10–15 years of senior experience in credit, counterparty, FX, or treasury risk within banking, payments, fintech, or regulated financial services
- Experience designing and governing second-line credit risk frameworks in multi-jurisdictional settings
- Strong knowledge of credit risk identification, measurement, underwriting, monitoring, and capital implications
- Experience overseeing risk across multiple product lines (merchant acquiring, cards, B2B, FX, settlement, banking partners)
- Proven ability to challenge first-line decisions and communicate risk to executives, product, and partners
- Strong data literacy; familiarity with SQL, Python, or similar tools
- Experience with regulated payments fintech, digital banks, or licensed financial institutions
