Overview
In this role you support the Engineering & Facilities team in Hoddesdon by performing calibrated instrumentation maintenance and fault-finding across site systems. You enable safe, compliant, and timely calibration activities aligned with GMP standards to keep plant operations efficient. You work with cross-functional teams to deliver reliable data and documentation that backs site performance and quality. The position offers hands-on work with diverse instrumentation in a global biopharma context and room for process improvements. You will help sustain high safety, quality, and compliance while contributing to the site’s reliability goals.
Responsibilities
- Carry out planned and reactive calibration, maintenance and fault-finding across site instrumentation and control systems
- Calibrate temperature, humidity, pressure, flow and speed instrumentation supporting BMS-monitored HVAC, reactor systems, stability chambers, cold rooms, utilities and room-pressure cascades
- Complete calibration and preventive maintenance schedules on time using the CMMS
- Respond to instrumentation failures and emergency breakdowns, minimizing disruption
- Produce accurate, traceable and GxP-compliant calibration certificates, maintenance records and technical reports
- Identify, document and escalate out-of-tolerance results, supporting impact assessments and investigations
- Proactively identify improvements or omissions within calibration and maintenance plans with Engineering Workshop Supervisor
- Maintain calibration equipment and reference standards, ensuring certifications remain current and traceable
- Support small projects including design, installation, commissioning and qualification of new or modified instrumentation and control systems
- Continually seek innovative and cost-effective ways to complete work without compromising safety, quality or compliance
- Ensure sufficient stock of calibration equipment, materials, components and replacement parts
- Ensure all work is carried out to the highest safety standards, proactively identifying and reporting hazards or risks
- Liaise with colleagues affected by planned work to minimize disruption and keep informed of progress and completion times
Key requirements
- Formal engineering apprenticeship, technical qualification or equivalent instrumentation/calibration/control engineering experience
- Post-apprenticeship experience in instrumentation, calibration or controls
- City & Guilds-accredited qualification or equivalent in a core engineering discipline
- Practical experience calibrating temperature, humidity, pressure, flow or speed instrumentation
- Broad knowledge of engineered systems, calibration practices and maintenance activities
- Understanding of GxP principles and experience producing compliant calibration and maintenance documentation
- Experience working with temperature, humidity and pressure instrument loops supporting BMS-monitored HVAC systems, reactor systems, stability chambers, cold rooms and room-pressure cascades
- Experience investigating instrumentation faults and out-of-tolerance calibration results
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Excellent documentation and record-keeping with ability to produce clear reports
- Good interpersonal skills and a customer-focused approach
- Strong commitment to safety, quality and compliance
- Proactive self-starter who works well in a team
- Experience with purified water systems, agitator speeds sensors, MCERTS flow meters and VOC gas analysers would be beneficial
- Desirable: GMP manufacturing equipment experience
- A recognized qualification in a secondary controls discipline or equivalent practical experience
- Knowledge of high-integrity process control systems and PLC programming
- Experience supporting installation, commissioning or qualification of new instrumentation
- Experience managing calibration equipment, reference standards and associated certification
