Overview
As a Senior Systems Safety Engineer, you will drive safety compliance and artefact generation to IEC 61508, supporting SIL claims for defence systems. You will lead safety design reviews, establish safety requirements, and guide a team to meet critical schedules. You’ll develop risk criteria, perform independent hazard analyses, and shape ALARP strategies while overseeing hazardous trials and safety documentation. This role involves accident investigations and ensuring cost-effective integration of safety requirements across projects.
Responsibilities
- Support safety processes and artefact generation to comply with IEC 61508 for SIL claims
- Evolve and review safety designs for products, equipment, and facilities
- Direct team members to meet critical schedules and resolve complex performance problems
- Develop acceptable risk criteria from first principles and perform hazard analysis
- Deliver hazard identification and hazard analysis using appropriate techniques
- Develop and deliver ALARP strategies and safety management for hazardous trials
- Prepare safety documents to support customer and test/operational range requirements
- Participate in accident investigations and identify corrective actions
- Assess interrelationships between safety requirements and concept design to optimize cost and effectiveness
Key requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline, or equivalent experience with 9 years (or 7 years with a related Masters)
- Familiarity with UK MOD safety management (Def Stan 00-056, ASEMS, Defence Safety Regulations)
- Experience in a safety-related role, preferably in defence
- Experience with IEC 61508 or equivalent (SIL concepts and compliance)
- Knowledge of UK, US, and EU safety legislation
- Experience with IT-based toolsets in system safety and MS Office
