Head of Haulage/Senior Transport Manager

Overview

You will lead the day-to-day haulage operation in a growing, family-owned group with a strong haulage focus. You’ll manage drivers, vehicles and compliance while driving efficiency and profitability. You’ll partner with the MD and cross-functional teams to develop the transport operation and support growth. This is a hands-on role that combines leadership, planning and regulatory expertise to deliver safe, compliant and reliable transport services.

Responsibilities

• Own and supervise daily haulage operations
• Lead HGV drivers and transport office staff
• Ensure compliance with Operator Licence and UK transport legislation
• Manage driver compliance, tachographs and Drivers’ Hours
• Monitor performance, KPIs, costs and SLAs
• Plan transport, routing and vehicle utilisation
• Oversee vehicle maintenance, inspections, MOTs and fleet availability
• Maintain records for vehicles, drivers and activity
• Support FORS compliance and health and safety culture
• Build relationships with customers and pursue new business opportunities
• Budget management and input to fleet investment and strategic planning
• continuously review processes to improve efficiency and profitability
• Report to Group Managing Director on performance and development

Key requirements

• CPC Transport Manager qualification
• Strong practical HGV haulage/transport operations experience
• Experience with Operator Licence responsibilities
• Good knowledge of UK transport legislation and drivers’ hours/tachograph rules
• Experience managing HGV drivers and transport operations
• Knowledge of fleet maintenance, inspections and compliance
• Strong organisational and problem-solving skills
• Experience managing operational performance and KPIs
• Excellent communication and customer relationship skills
• Good IT skills (Excel and Outlook)
