Associate Director – Building Structures

Overview

In this role, you drive the design and delivery of large, multidisciplinary building projects from concept to handover. You will lead technical direction, coordinate across architects, engineers and specialists, and shape sustainable structural solutions. You’ll manage project scope, fees and risks while mentoring junior team members. This role sits at the heart of a growing Structures team delivering high-profile UK and international projects, with a clear path to chartership.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design process for multi-disciplinary schemes from inception through handover
• Provide technical leadership on complex projects and coordinate with architects, engineers and consultants
• Lead tender bids and business development opportunities, and manage project fees and commercial position
• Resolve technical issues with independent judgement and ensure timely risk mitigation
• Mentor and develop junior team members towards chartership
• Own and deliver sustainable structural solutions from concept to construction
• Build strong client and stakeholder relationships and coordinate with other WSP disciplines
• Support strategic project delivery and provide bespoke solutions for niche design challenges

Key requirements

• Proven track record delivering major, multi-disciplinary projects
• Project management and technical delivery leadership for medium to large schemes
• Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills with clients and project teams
• Experience in commercial and technical management using business tools
• Experience in team management and client-facing consultancy roles
• Degree or HNC/HND in a relevant discipline; Chartered MIStructE / MICE preferred
• Solid structural engineering design experience in all materials; knowledge of national codes and standards
• Experience with ETABS, RAM Structural System, Tekla Structural Designer & Tedds; Revit, Rhino and Grasshopper valued
• Experience as Approved Certifier of Design (SER) in Scotland or commitment to pursuing this
