Overview

As Principal Mechanical Engineer in our Water Team, you will lead mechanical design for water and wastewater projects, guiding multi-disciplinary delivery from feasibility to construction. You’ll collaborate with clients, contractors and internal teams to deliver compliant, high-quality solutions at scale. Your work shapes infrastructure that supports communities and aligns with AECOM’s digital and design standards. Responsibilities

  • Lead the mechanical design for wastewater and water infrastructure projects
  • Conduct site surveys and liaise with clients, contractors and suppliers
  • Design pumping stations, headloss calculations, pump selection, screens, grit removal, penstocks and valves
  • Develop odour control systems, plant and pipework layouts, and technical specifications/reports
  • Engage in all design stages (Feasibility to Construction) ensuring standards compliance
  • Collaborate with other discipline teams and communicate with clients throughout the design and planning phases
  • Mentor junior staff, delegate tasks and support bid preparation and management
  • Deliver high-quality designs within budgets and timelines for diverse clients
  • Review client deliverables: calculations, drawings and technical reports to standards
  • Support and shape AECOM’s digital design offerings (BIM, Projectwise, intelligent P&IDs, in-house tools)
  • Contribute to project delivery and client engagement across the Water portfolio

Key requirements

  • Extensive design experience in large-scale water engineering projects with multi-disciplinary knowledge
  • BEng or MEng in a related engineering field with water/wastewater experience
  • Chartered Member of a relevant Professional Institution
  • Proven experience in team leadership, mentoring and line management
  • Experience managing projects, delegating tasks and mentoring teams
  • Strong collaboration and coordination skills with clients and stakeholders
