Overview

As Principal Structural Engineer you will lead the delivery of complex, multi-sector projects within Waterman’s London Structures team. You’ll provide technical leadership from inception to completion, delivering innovative and sustainable structural solutions. You will mentor junior staff, coordinate multidisciplinary design teams, and manage client relationships to uphold quality, programme, and commercial objectives. This role combines hands-on design leadership with strategic team development in a net-zero focused practice.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership from project inception through to completion
  • Lead the structural design and analysis of building projects
  • Oversee project delivery, ensuring quality, programme and commercial objectives
  • Produce and review calculations, drawings, specifications and technical reports
  • Guide and mentor Graduate, Engineer and Senior Engineer colleagues
  • Collaborate with architects, clients, contractors and other engineering disciplines
  • Develop integrated design solutions balancing technical excellence with practical delivery
  • Build and maintain client relationships and represent Waterman professionally
  • Attend project and design team meetings and contribute to business development
  • Lead delivery of exciting, varied projects across sectors
  • Support development and growth of the London Structures team

Key requirements

  • Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
  • Chartered Engineer status (MIStructE or MICE)
  • Significant consultancy experience in structural engineering
  • Strong knowledge across steel, reinforced concrete, masonry and timber
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary project teams and managing multiple projects
  • Excellent understanding of CDM Regulations, British Standards and Eurocodes
  • Strong client-facing and relationship-building skills
  • Experience reviewing and approving technical designs, calculations and reports
  • Excellent communication, leadership and mentoring skills
  • Strong planning, organisational and commercial awareness
  • Proactive, collaborative approach to delivering sustainable solutions
