Senior/Principal/Associate Civil/Structural Engineer

Overview

In this role you lead civil and structural design for Transmission & Distribution projects and act as a technical authority. You will shape proposals, mentor engineers, and support client-facing activities in a high-impact UK T&D context. You’ll drive design leadership, risk management, and value engineering while fostering training and capability development. The position offers influence over strategy and the growth of Ramboll’s T&D service with a collaborative culture.

Responsibilities

• Act as Design Manager / Lead Engineer for T&D civil and structural projects
• Lead delivery of designs for substations, overhead line foundations, cable routes, and associated T&D infrastructure
• Ensure compliance with UK standards (Eurocodes, BS EN), National Grid / DNO specs, and CDM & safety requirements
• Review, approve, and mentor designs from junior/ intermediate engineers
• Oversee design risk management, technical assurance, and value engineering
• Lead the training strategy for civil and structural engineers in T&D; deliver technical training and best practice workshops
• Mentor graduates and mid-level engineers
• Attend client, bid, and marketing meetings as senior technical representative; support bid strategy, scope, technical proposals, cost and programme input
• Build long-term relationships with DNOs, National Grid, ICPs, and EPC contractors
• Provide technical input to project planning, resourcing, risk management, and grow the T&D offering
• Support innovation, digital engineering, and design efficiency initiatives

Key requirements

• BEng / MEng in Civil or Structural Engineering (degree requirement)
• Chartered Engineer status (CEng MICE / MIStructE)
• 10+ years’ civil & structural experience with strong T&D exposure
• Proven experience in Transmission & Distribution infrastructure including substations and power networks
• Experience with National Grid and DNOs (UK Power Networks, SSEN, SPEN, WPD, etc.)
• Experience in framework delivery environments
• Demonstrable experience as Lead Engineer, Design Manager, or Technical Authority
• Strong knowledge of UK design standards and Eurocodes and CDM Regulations
• Confident client-facing communicator
• Experience leading and mentoring engineers
• Full UK driving licence
