Financial Controller

Overview

In this role you will own the finance function in a growing energy tech business, reporting to the CEO and leadership team. You will build cashflow, forecasting, reporting, and governance to support rapid growth. A key early priority is moving to a modern, AI-enabled accounting platform and introducing automation across finance processes. You will shape a lean, scalable finance function and potentially lead a future team as the company expands. This is an entrepreneurial role with high impact and close collaboration with senior leadership.

Responsibilities

• Build and maintain cashflow forecasts (short and medium term) reflecting energy market movements
• Manage working capital, liquidity, credit cover and collateral
• Own the payments function and establish controls
• Produce monthly and quarterly management information for leadership
• Prepare financial reports and accounts for quarterly board meetings
• Coordinate year-end external audit
• Oversee statutory reporting and regulatory returns
• Lead annual budgeting, rolling forecasts, and financial model
• Support resilience assessments, stress testing, and regulatory reporting
• Lead transition to a new accounting platform with transaction-level reconciliation
• Introduce AI-enabled and automated workflows for payments, reconciliation, and close
• Collaborate with technology team to improve data processing and usage of financial data
• Establish scalable policies, controls, processes, and reporting structures
• Develop understanding of energy market and cashflow dynamics
• Recruit, lead, and develop internal finance team as the business grows
• Grow into broader senior and regulatory accounting responsibilities

Key requirements

• Qualified accountant with ACA, ACCA or CIMA
• At least five years of professional finance experience
• Experience as Finance Manager, Senior Finance Manager, Financial Controller or similar
• Strong knowledge of core accounting, controls and management reporting
• Experience coordinating external audit
• Strong cashflow forecasting, budgeting and working capital management
• Confident as sole senior finance person after handover
• Entrepreneurial mindset and desire to contribute beyond back-office
• Passion for AI accounting software, automation and process improvement
• Ability to work with complex transactional data and collaborate with software engineers
• Experience in energy, utilities, commodity trading or regulated sector beneficial but not essential
• Experience implementing or migrating an accounting system advantageous
• Exposure to SQL, Python, BI tools or large datasets useful
