Overview

In this role you apply protein mass spectrometry expertise to characterise biotherapeutics, guiding early-phase development and critical decisions on quality attributes. You’ll work across Discovery and CMC Development in a matrix environment, translating analytical findings into actionable insights for project advancement. The position blends lab-based work with cross-functional collaboration to support tech transfers, degradation studies and regulatory documentation. This role offers exposure to diverse modalities and analytical technologies, with a clear impact on turning promising molecules into medicines.

Responsibilities

  • Perform analytical characterisation of biotherapeutics using MS and chromatography to generate knowledge for project decisions
  • Develop, optimise and troubleshoot analytical methods to identify post-translational modifications and critical quality attributes
  • Support early-phase portfolio progression through technology transfer, forced-degradation studies, and analytical strategy delivery
  • Plan and deliver high-quality experimental work, analyse complex data, and communicate clear scientific conclusions
  • Collaborate across matrix teams in Discovery and CMC Development, contributing technical insight, reports and regulatory documentation
  • Maintain high standards of data integrity, scientific rigour, lab safety and effective documentation

Key requirements

  • PhD, MSc or equivalent in analytical science, biochemistry, chemistry or related field with application to biopharmaceuticals or therapeutics
  • Strong hands-on experience setting up, running and troubleshooting mass spectrometry (Orbitrap and/or Q-TOF)
  • Experience of LC-MS or LC-MS/MS and analytical chromatography for protein/therapeutic characterisation
  • Knowledge of protein biochemistry and relationship between structure, function and critical quality attributes
  • Ability to plan experiments and independently analyse and interpret complex analytical data
  • Effective technical communication, organisational and matrix-working skills, commitment to data integrity, documentation and safe lab practice
