Overview
You will join a specialist engineering team performing dockside mechanical maintenance on submarines, ensuring safety and quality through planned and reactive work. In this regulated defence setting, you inspect, repair, overhaul, and test mechanical systems, collaborating with engineers, supervisors, and client representatives to keep maintenance programmes on schedule. The role focuses on delivering high standards and contributing to continuous improvement in a challenging, mission-critical environment. This is a permanent role offering stability and a clear impact on vessel readiness.

Responsibilities
- Carry out planned preventive and corrective mechanical maintenance on submarine systems and equipment
- Inspect, diagnose and repair mechanical faults using drawings and technical documentation
- Remove, overhaul, refurbish and reinstall mechanical components including pumps, valves, pipework and rotating equipment
- Conduct mechanical testing and functional checks post-maintenance
- Ensure work adheres to engineering standards, quality procedures and customer requirements
- Produce accurate maintenance records, inspection reports and completion documentation
- Comply with Health, Safety and Environmental regulations including confined space and permit-to-work
- Support continuous improvement initiatives and maintain high engineering standards
- Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams to deliver maintenance programmes to schedule
- Maintain good housekeeping in workshop and dockside areas
Key requirements
- Recognised Mechanical Engineering Apprenticeship, NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds or equivalent qualification
- Proven experience in mechanical maintenance within heavy engineering, marine, defence, nuclear, manufacturing or industrial environments
- Experience maintaining rotating equipment, pumps, valves, hydraulic systems, pipework or mechanical assemblies
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical documentation
- Experience using mechanical measuring equipment and fault-finding techniques
- Strong understanding of safe systems of work and quality procedures
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Excellent attention to detail and commitment to high quality workmanship
- Previous submarine/naval/defence experience would be advantageous but not essential
- UK National Security Vetting Status – ability to obtain SC Clearance
