Overview
As Platform Engineer – Content Protection, you translate analytics and protection strategy into operational controls that safeguard content while preserving discoverability. You’ll work with cross-functional teams to design, implement, and operate traffic protection measures and WAF controls. Your focus is to mitigate automated access and content scraping without harming legitimate users. This role offers impact by strengthening platform resilience, enabling secure growth, and shaping how AI-driven access interacts with discovery services.
Responsibilities
- Build and refine WAF signals, policies, and rules to detect and mitigate automated scraping and abusive traffic
- Own the lifecycle of traffic protection controls from design to retirement
- Implement rate-limiting, bot-management, and traffic-shaping aligned with business needs
- Ensure protection controls preserve discoverability, accessibility, and user experience
- Convert analytical signals into practical enforcement with measurable outcomes
- Lead incident response for scraping, automated abuse, enumeration and traffic incidents
- Manage day-to-day Fastly MSS relationships and related tooling
- Coordinate with stakeholders; communicate impacts and implementation plans
- Collaborate with Data Analysts and SEO teams to validate detection signals and outcomes
- Develop governance and playbooks for content protection and operations
- Support product and platform teams with traffic-aware architectural decisions
- Contribute to policies on acceptable automated access and future AI/agentic access models
- Lay foundations for managing AI-driven access patterns at scale
Key requirements
- Hands-on WAF engineering experience, preferably Fastly Next-Gen WAF or equivalent
- Experience implementing bot management, rate limiting and traffic management controls
- Proven incident response experience for scraping, automated abuse or traffic-related incidents
- Strong understanding of HTTP, TLS, CDN and edge technologies
- Ability to balance security with operational and business considerations
