Overview
As Commercial Manager for a major rail infrastructure project in London, you drive commercial strategy and financial outcomes. You will lead a team of surveyors, manage contractual and commercial aspects, and optimise margins and cash flow within NEC/ICE frameworks. You’ll work closely with cross‑functional teams to deliver a multi‑million pound project for a top civil engineering contractor. This role offers clear progression toward senior commercial leadership. You will shape risk management and commercial processes across the contract lifecycle.
Responsibilities
- Manage commercial and contractual elements of one or more high‑value contracts
- Monitor, forecast, and report financial performance; maximise margins and cash position
- Ensure timely recognition of change and commercial approvals
- Lead negotiations with customers to reach timely, non‑adversarial agreements
- Supervise final accounts and negotiate settlements
- Prepare commercial appraisals for tender opportunities and contribute to tender strategies
- Develop and maintain relationships with major customers to manage contracts end‑to‑end
- Support subcontract negotiations to minimise risk and maximise business value
- Identify risks and propose policy-aligned responses
- Lead, develop, and motivate commercial staff; ensure accountability
- Contribute to commercial procedures and policy implementation to improve effectiveness
Key requirements
- Senior‑level commercial experience on civil engineering projects
- Strong negotiation skills and commercial acumen
- Effective team player with clear communication and assertive style
- Extensive knowledge of NEC and ICE forms of contract
- HND/HNC (ideally degree) with professional qualification (RICS/ICES)
