Senior data scientist

Overview

In this role you will join a cross-disciplinary data science team to build scalable, impactful ML products and forecasting solutions that inform energy decisions. You will work closely with data engineers, software engineers and business partners to deliver analytics that drive value and support bp’s net-zero mission. You will apply advanced forecasting and optimization methods, explore AI tooling and LLMs, and mentor others while maintaining rigorous data science practices. This position offers the chance to influence energy markets and operational decisions at scale.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate within a cross-disciplinary team of data scientists, engineers, and business partners
• Design, prototype, productionize and maintain scalable data science products with ML/forecasting components
• Apply forecasting and optimization techniques (e.g., linear, logistic, Lasso, Ridge, GAM) and understand energy/commodity markets
• Leverage Claude or GEN AI tools and LLMs to deliver analyses or AI products
• Conduct data analyses to yield actionable business insights
• Adhere to data science procedures (design reviews, unit testing, monitoring, code reviews, documentation)
• Present results to peers and senior management
• Contribute to improving developer velocity and mentor colleagues

Key requirements

• MSc or PhD in a quantitative field
• 5+ years hands-on experience designing and deploying data science products in complex environments
• Applied knowledge across all data lifecycle stages
• Solid understanding of statistics and machine learning foundations
• Programming experience (Python, Go, Java, C++)
• Advanced SQL knowledge
• Knowledge of experimental design and analysis
