Overview

As Senior Consultant, you will lead dangerous goods and process safety work on UK and EU projects, ensuring regulatory compliance and risk-driven design integration. You will contribute across the asset lifecycle from strategy to operation, mentoring junior colleagues and expanding Arup’s capability in Europe. You’ll work in a multi-disciplinary team to deliver hazard assessments, safety cases and workshops, translating complex safety issues for clients and regulators. This role offers meaningful impact by improving safety outcomes on major infrastructure and energy projects.

Responsibilities

  • Lead dangerous goods and process safety advice on UK and EU projects
  • Deliver DSEAR and ATEX assessments, including hazardous area classification and explosion risk management
  • Support major hazard safety cases and reports (COMAH/Seveso-type regimes)
  • Lead or support quantitative consequence assessments for dispersion, fire and explosion risks
  • Advise clients on UK/EU legislation, standards and guidance
  • Plan and facilitate safety workshops (HAZID, HAZOP, bow-tie)
  • Provide practical, proportionate safety advice using engineering judgment
  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams to embed safety into design and delivery
  • Provide technical review, quality assurance and peer support
  • Engage with regulators, approving bodies and independent assessors
  • Contribute to bids, proposals and client discussions across UK/EU
  • Mentor junior colleagues and grow dangerous goods capability

Key requirements

  • A degree in engineering, science, mathematics or related discipline
  • Chartered status with IChemE, IOSH or IMechE (desirable)
  • Strong background in process safety or major hazard risk
  • Experience in consultancy, operator, engineering or regulatory environments
  • Experience delivering DSEAR/ATEX, fire and explosion studies and related risk assessments
  • Knowledge of UK/EU dangerous goods and process safety legislation (COMAH/Seveso)
  • Experience contributing to or leading safety cases or safety reports for EU projects
  • Ability to explain complex technical issues to clients, regulators and teams
  • Strong organizational skills with ability to work across jurisdictions and mentor others
  • DGSA certification or experience with DGSA requirements (desirable)
